Areva’s bid was thrown out of the tender for the expansion of the Temelín nuclear power plant. This has left Toshiba’s U.S. unit Westinghouse and Russia’s Atomstroyexport to compete for the Czech Republic’s largest-ever energy deal, under which two new generator blocks will be added to the plant, doubling its output. Media reports put the total price of the deal at €7.7bn or more. ČEZ, the Czech power group, says Areva failed to meet “crucial requirements,” but Areva plans to appeal the decision. The winner is to be picked by the end of next year.
