Aš in the Cheb region wants to buy the main post office building on Poštovní náměstí. The multi-storey building in the centre of the town is currently almost empty and in need of reconstruction. The town hall wants to build apartments with care services on the upper floors. The building is expected to cost the town approximately CZK 17 million, with the condition of the sale being the preservation of postal services, the mayor of Aš, Vítězslav Kokoř (ANO) said today.

The town learned about the sale of the main post office building in the middle of last year. The town hall approached the state-owned enterprise, saying that if it offered the building at a public auction, so-called poverty merchants could bid for it and build, for example, a hostel there. The town therefore expressed interest in buying the building directly from the Czech Post.

It is in the interest of both Aš and the Czech Post to keep the branch in the building. According to Matyáš Vitík, spokesman for the post office, there are several options for a solution. The most probable is the creation of a multi-post office Partner, which would be operated by the city. “We said we need to know all the data regarding the operation, including costs. So we will have another meeting with the director (of the Czech Post) in two months. The plan is to set up a multi-branch post office like the one to be established in Brno,” the mayor said.

The main and only branch in Aš should also have a delivery room. The company decided to resume its operation at the beginning of the year after people complained about the delivery of letters. Complications arose two years ago when the Czech Post closed the centre in Aš and served the area directly from Cheb. People were receiving parcels with long delays, in some cases not at all. According to the city authorities, the quality of letter delivery has improved significantly since the delivery centre was reopened and the delivery staff was concentrated in Aš.

The town hall wants to build care apartments in the unused space of the building, which are in great demand in the town. The plan is for 15 to 20 1+1 flats. The reconstruction should cost approximately CZK 40 million. The city wants to get a subsidy for it.
