Austria pushes for open borders with Germany

13 May 2020

Austria is pushing to ease some border controls with Switzerland within days and to end all controls by June, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz told the Swiss broadcaster SRF, as countries push ahead with plans to loosen COVID-19 restrictions. Switzerland and Austria are among the European countries that enacted border controls to help contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Larger border crossings with Slovenia such as those in Bad Radkersburg and Spielfeld are already fully open, while the crossing at Grazer Straße (B67) between Spielfeld and Sentilj has been passable since the end of April. Kurz is also planning to reopen its borders with Germany by June 15.

The federal cabinet in Berlin will discuss the opening of borders, as will the European Commission, which is expected to recommend opening borders between mutually low-impacted areas.
