In Austria, over 1.8 million people are currently unemployed or have had their working hours shortened. The country’s Ministry of Labor says 503,494 people are currently registered as unemployed, 46,168 are in training and 1.3 million people are in the short-time working regime. Unemployment has risen sharply since mid-March due to forced closings in the tourism and catering sectors. There are currently no sanctions for unemployed people in Austria who do not take a job.
