Austrian hotels were allowed to open at the end of May after a two-and-a-half-month forced break due to the coronavirus, but the damage they have suffered is enormous. The Austrian Hoteliers Association (OeHV) estimates that volume of the damage to the sector is the equivalent of ten times its average annual profit.
Martin Stanic of OeHV said that classic tourist destinations on the lakes will attract guests and that hotels could even sell out if the weather is sunny, but warned that those in other locations were virtually empty. Hotels in the country’s cities have been hit hard because there’s an almost total lack of foreign tourists. Occupancy is slightly better in wellness hotels and spas, but they have to limit themselves to just 70 percent occupancy in order to be in line with new anti-Covid regulations.
