Austrian maintains most border restrictions

4 May 2020

The Austrian Ministry of Health has extended restrictions on entry into Austria until the end of May, although exceptions have been made for seasonal workers in the agricultural and forestry sectors as well as for caregivers and medical staff. Austrian nationals and persons registered to live in Austria will have to undergo a two-week quarantine upon returning home, although this could be lifted if they test negative for coronavirus. Transiting through the country is still permitted, but as before, exit from Austria must be ensured.

However, planes will not be allowed to land from China, Iran, Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Russia and Ukraine. This ban will be in force until May 22 but has been lifted in the case of South Korea. Those entering the country by plane must quarantine for two weeks or test negative for the virus and entry will be blocked for travelers arriving from outside the Schengen area. Passenger rail traffic to Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein remains suspended until at last May 22.
