According to the Romanian National Statistics Institute (INS), the net average wage in Romania fell 8.5 percent to RON 1,467 (€338) in January 2012 compared to December 2011. The highest salaries were recorded by financial brokers (RON 3,577), while the lowest pay is to be found in hotels and restaurants (RON 852). Computers and electronic manufacturing along with electronic and optical production saw the biggest month-on-month decreases in net average wages in January 2012 – down 24.3 percent. Wages dropped by 20 and 23 percent in the manufacturing of basic pharmaceutical products, telecommunications, and publishing activities, according to INS.
