The new look of the Českomoravská B metro station after the planned reconstruction will be designed for the Prague Transport Company (DPP) by designer Maxim Velčovský and studio edit! architects, who were successful in the competition. Ondřej Kubala from the DPP’s communication department announced. The company plans to launch a tender for the reconstruction this year, during which the original ceramic tiles of the station’s interior will be replaced by glass panels.
The existing ceramic lining of the walls and pillars proved to be technically unsuitable and the company has chosen glass in combination with enamel as a replacement. Forty-three teams entered the station design competition, of which nine made it to the final round and prepared competition designs.
The winning design involves the use of glass with a special grid formed using two glass surfaces between which bubbles will be trapped. “Each glass therefore creates a unique raster, but at the same time it can be easily replicated. The glass raster also better absorbs potential optical damage and scratches,” Velčovský said. The jury praised the winning solution as imaginative, minimalist, humble and feasible.
Metroprojekt is in charge of the reconstruction project and the winners of the competition will now translate their design into project documentation. This should be ready in the autumn, the company plans to launch a competition for a construction company by the end of the year and expects to start work in the second half of next year. DPP will coordinate the repairs with a private developer who is planning his own project around the station and, in agreement with the company, will, for example, insulate the above-ground part of the station lobby, make a new perimeter cladding or build toilets.
DPP is currently repairing the A Jiřího z Poděbrad metro station, which has been closed to passengers for ten months since mid-January. The company is also replacing the ceiling slab at the Florenc C metro station and preparing the reconstruction of a number of other stations.
