Bánffy Castle in Transylvania has been restored

29 November 2023

The Bánffy Castle in Bonțida (Cluj county), built by the Hungarian noble family Banffy, has been restored. The project was carried out following access to European funds worth around EUR 4 million, plus around EUR 7.5 million from the county’s own budget.

The property, known as “Transylvania’s Versailles”, has over the years attracted architects from different continents to study its structure. Construction of the castle began in 1437 and was completed in 1890.

“The Bánffy Castle a landmark of identity and a reference point on the tourist map of Transylvania, will be open to the general public and will be a community space, hosting cultural events and more,” said Alin Tișe, President of Cluj County Council.
