Beira Baixa railway line construction due for completion in 2018

9 February 2016

The line section has only 46km, but the works for its modernization between
Portuguese Railways (CP) has revealed that the construction of tracks between Covilhã and Guarda corridor will finally begin in 2017. The line was discontinued in 2009 with the intention of rebuilding it at an estimated cost of €85m. However, when the financial crisis hit Portugal in 2009, work on the project was called off. The lack of railway service, however, has generated significant extra costs as it was forced to offer alternative bus connections along the line and deal with congestion issues in the case of problems along the Beira Alta line.
Completion is now scheduled for 2018, by which time the rails will have been replaced, electrified and a modern system of signaling and communications will have been installed.
