In an attempt to increase the pace of installation of solar cells on its territory, the city of Berlin has officially set a goal of meeting one-quarter of its electricity needs with solar by 2050. By that time, under a previously agreed-upon goal, the city will also be carbon neutral, writes the news server Recharge. City officials believe that the roofs of its buildings can be used to produce up to 25 percent of the electricity it consumers but it says the federal government will have to improve the legal framework for such investments. Poor planning and mistakes in execution mean that the German capital doesn’t even produce 5 percent of its energy needs using renewable energy sources.
