Bílovický Mill to be demolished in January, municipality to build two new buildings

27 December 2023

Workers will start demolishing the mill in Bílovice nad Svitavou in the Brno Region, which ceased to serve its purpose at the beginning of this millennium, at the beginning of January. The mayor Miroslav Boháček (STAN) expects to select a company that will start construction immediately after the demolition is completed. Two buildings will be constructed to serve the school, leisure activities and a planned microbrewery. The municipality will pay CZK 265 million for the demolition and construction, having received a CZK 209 million subsidy. The buildings should be in operation from spring 2026.

Mill Island is a relatively large area by the Svitava River and the mill embankment and has become one of the development areas of the municipality, which has about 3,700 inhabitants. It is also one of the few places that can still be built on, as the village has seen quite a boom in residential development over the last 20 years, with around 1500 residents moving into new buildings. This growth has not been matched by the local primary school, which will now have a department in the new seven-storey building.

“The first four floors will be dedicated to the elementary school, which will house preschoolers and first and second grades,” Boháček said. The local school has a total of 570 children. Thanks to the increase in capacity, pupils from Babice or Řícmanice, for example, who today have to commute to other schools in the area, will be able to go to Bílovice. The fifth floor will house the ZUŠ Šlapanice, which still operates in Bílovice on a commercial lease. Thanks to the premises from the town, its rental costs will be lower. “Half of the fifth floor is also intended for clubs belonging to the SVČ Lužánky. On the sixth floor there will be a large conference room for 100 people and on the seventh floor there will be a small clubhouse,” Boháček added.

In the second smaller building, the town wants to have a microbrewery and a pub, above which would be a food dispenser for schoolchildren. A glass corridor will connect the two buildings so schoolchildren won’t have to go outside on their way to lunch.

There are two more apartment buildings in the Mill area that will remain there. The municipality is also planning a second phase of revitalisation of the island, which is intended to be a resting place for locals. In January, it will apply for a subsidy from the State Environmental Fund (SEF). “There will be playgrounds on the island, which will be freely accessible, and there will be space for festivals,” Boháček said.

In the past decade, a new square was also built in Bílovice with a new municipal office, a ceremonial hall and a post office. It is in Žižkova Street on the site of old buildings that could be demolished. Until then, Bílovice had neither a square nor a village square.
