Bohumín in Karviná Region is continuing the renovation of former mining apartments in the town centre, which it bought from Residomo five years ago. After insulation, the town is preparing to replace water pipes and reconstruct some bathrooms. It is investing around CZK 5 million in the modernisation. Jana Končítková, a spokeswoman for the town hall said today.
“For the residents of the three-storey houses at the intersection of Štefánikova Street and Dr. E. Beneš Avenue, until recently, rental housing represented a life in unsatisfactory conditions. The previous owners of the four buildings, which were built in 1957, made virtually no investments in them and people only saw their windows replaced. This was also the reason why the city bought the apartment buildings from Residomo in 2019,” the spokesperson recalled.
After the buyout, the city began preparing a project to revitalize the apartment buildings. Two years ago, it had them insulated and the balconies were also repaired. “This year, the water distribution systems will come next. The infrastructure is outdated and its renewal is necessary to ensure a reliable water supply. This will minimise the risk of accidents and leaks,” said Deputy Mayor Igor Bruzl (SOCDEM).
This year’s stage of modernisation includes the replacement of water and waste lines in cellars, water risers will also be replaced and the city plans to renovate some bathrooms, where, for example, tiles and tiles are being replaced. “We want to ensure that tenants live in an environment that meets today’s standards,” said Kateřina Pálková, Head of the Housing Management Department.
The city has announced a public tender for a contractor for the work. The cost is expected to be around CZK 5 million. Repairs should start this March and will last four months. According to the spokesperson, complete reconstruction of bathrooms will not be necessary in all 24 apartments.
Some of the housing units have been modernised as a whole in the recent past. These were apartments that had been vacated by their users. “We are renovating each apartment before the auction so that the tenants can move into the new one,” Pálková added.
