Bomb scare in Bratislava stops Old Bridge work

30 July 2014

Work on the Old Bridge (Stary most) in Bratislava has halted as reports of potential munitions near its pillars emerged. It’s thought that a sonar study of the area had found four suspiciously shaped objects, one of which could be a ship mine. Reconstruction work on the bridge halted in June after fears arose about the possible presence of bombs from the time of WWII when a nearby oil refinery was attacked by the United States air force. A munitions expert from Slovakia’s ministry of interior said it was still unclear if the objects were explosive devices. The bridge will carry trams across the river from Bratislava’s center to the Petržalka district once work is completed at the end of 2015.
