Booking.com announced that it was laying off between 4,000 and 5,000 of its employees, out of a total workforce of 17,500. But it’s unknown how many of the 6,000 workers it employs in Amsterdam will lose their jobs. The American online accommodation platform is one of the largest employers in Amsterdam, or at least it was before the Covid-19 pandemic wrecked the mass tourism industry. Booking.com took advantage of a $64.5 million in support from the U.S. government in order to continue paying its workers in the Netherlands. Without the aid, the total layoffs would have been far greater.
