Brno-Western Control Committee will examine the acquisition of flats by the family of Deputy Kerndl

15 December 2022

The control committee of the Brno-střed municipal district will examine some apartments in Brno at the request of Deputy Mayor Robert Kerndl (ODS). The name of Kerndl and his family members appeared in the media in connection with the acquisition of flats from the city. Kerndl considers this to be damage to his name, so he is demanding an audit to rule out that he has damaged the city. The deputies of the Brno-centre agreed that the audit committee can look into the matter.

In an open letter, Kerndl asked for an inspection of the houses and apartments in Bayerova, Hlinky, Úvoz, Gorky, Lidická, Burešova, Veveří, Botanická and Slovákova streets. Some time ago, Seznam Zprávy published information that Kerndl’s family, including the deputy mayor of Brno-centre and Kerndl’s half-brother Roman Kotera, had acquired more than a dozen properties that originally belonged to the city. Kerndl sees this as an effort to damage his name.

Apartment allocations and sales have been a big topic in Brno in recent weeks. In October, Brno was rocked by two police raids, which were also related to the allocation of apartments. Police first charged eight people over the allocation of flats at Brno city hall. One of them is Otakar Bradáč, the chairman of the housing commission from the last election period at Brno-central town hall and an ODS politician. After a second raid related to the allocation of flats and the activities of one of the city’s companies, seven people were charged. They also raided the office of Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL), who is a candidate for environment minister. Hladík has not been charged.
