The European Commission approved an investment of €83m from the Fundo de Coesão for the expansion of the metro network in Lisbon. The circular line is expected to cost the city €210m, with €46m due next year. The investment would extend the metro line by 1,900 meters and allow for the construction of two new stations – Estrela and Santos – connecting Rato to Cais do Sodré.
The link is designed to create better connections between the city center and the periphery, which should increase the use of public transportation upon completion in 2024. Transport experts who model such things estimate that the metro line would cut the number of kilometers travelled by commuters in cars by 25 million.
