Renovation work is scheduled to break ground on the main hall of the historic Nyugati Railway Station in Budapest this week. The project is expected to cost HUF 9bn and will be overseen by Magyar Építő, according to Hungarian state railways MÁV. The renovation is expected to take seven months to complete. The main hall will be closed during this time period. The building, opened in 1877, has not been renovated in 40 years. This becomes obvious any time it rains water can soon be seen streaming from the roof from multiple locations. The rail station is the busiest in Hungary, serving 18 million passengers annually and 480 trains daily, according to MÁV CEO Róbert Homoly.
