Budapest’s city council has refused to hold a referendum on whether to make a bid for the 2024 Olympics. The proposal was made by members of opposition parties but the governing parties won a 16-14 vote to reject the idea. Budapest is one of four cities together with Rome, Paris and Los Angeles now still in the bidding to host the 2024 summer games. The proposal for a referendum came after residents of Hamburg rejected the German port city’s bid. A referendum in Hungary could still be held if enough signatures of Budapest residents were collected, but analysts consider it unlikely that the bid will be blocked.
