Building materials stagnation expected in 2013

3 December 2012

The Romanian building materials market for residential projects will not increase next year because there is no reason to indicate a positive trend, said Liviu Stoleru, general manager of Cemacon brick manufacturer. According to the company, in 2011 the market for bricks fell by 27 percent compared to 2010, while in 2012 the reduction was 34 percent.

A slumping construction is sector is clearly to blame, though Romanians can take comfort in the knowledge that things are even worse elsewhere. Construction fell across Europe in September, but while Romania’s decline in output was 4 percent, it wasn’t nearly as dramatic as the situation in Portugal, which saw a 13.4 percent drop. Italy’s construction sector output fell 8 percent in September.
