Atlanta-based developer Carter plans to begin construction next week on 180 apartments in downtown Sarasota that have been on the books for three years. The mixed use scheme features a 10-story rental building, with ground floor retail and two floors of parking and is slated for completion sometime in 2017. The project is located in the 1400 block of Second Street downtown, on land that includes the former site of the United Way of Sarasota County Inc . Carter is among the largest real estate developers in the Southeast, with nearly $1 billion in assets built over the past decade.
“We consider it an interesting site, and the adjacency to the existing Whole Foods Market was a big driver for us,” says Jerome Hagley, a Carter executive vice president. “Sarasota has barriers to entry and that property, in particular, has some unique zoning.”
