CBI demands new UK air hub

1 September 2014

The CBI, a powerful UK business lobby, says the UK now requires a larger hub airport if the country’s long-term growth is to be secured. In a recently released report, the group warns that the UK is already losing business to its European rivals when it comes to providing direct flight service to the world’s emerging markets. Several options are currently being considered, including a third runway for Heathrow, lengthening an existing runway there, adding a runway at Gatwick, or the creation of a new airport on the Thames estuary. The last option has been dubbed “Boris Island” thanks to support from London’s mayor. Gatwick and Heathrow are currently locked in battle to win support for new investment.
