The new city administration appears to be serious about its promise to return trams to Wenceslas square within four years. The city council ordered the public transport authority to begin preparations for connecting the rails running down Vinohradska with those that cross Wenceslas square from Jindřišská to Vodičková streets. Engineers will have to determine if additional support for the Muzeum and Můstek metro vestibules is needed to allow them to bear the weight of the trams. Architects will also look at the current metro entrances are located and work out how to make them connect with the new tram stops most efficiently. The city also wants to build new tram lines to connect Vinohradská with the tram rails serving the Main Train station, but this will require a change to the city’s master plan. The new connections are crucial to Prague’s plans to create new tram lines and extend the network further into the suburbs. Too much tram traffic is already directed through a single line of tracks in the center and any disruption there immediately causes a collapse of the entire system.
