Confirmed: Land Rover to build new Defender in Nitra

30 April 2019

British-based Land Rover confirmed today that its redesigned Defender will be outsourced to Nitra, Slovakia. The move is no surprise and was the assumed purpose of the company’s newly built factory in the city, but it’s a bitter pill to swallow for a nation that’s still engulfed in the chaos of Brexit. In its statement, Land Rover claims the vehicle was designed in Gaydon in Warwichkshire and and underwent extreme testing at the company’s facility in Kenya. The new Defender is intended to appeal to an even wider group of consumers, which market watchers expect means it will place greater emphasis on comfort and gadgets. The company claims the decision frees up its British factory to build Range Rovers and Land Rovers, including the new electric models.
