Construction production in Portugal in May recovered 2.6 percent compared to the previous month, but lagged 8.7 behind the pace of work in May 2019. The figures are from Eurostat, which reveals that production in construction increased 27.9 percent in the eurozone 21.2 percent in the European Union, reversing 3 months of declines in activity due to the pandemic.
The figures compared favorably with decreases of 18.3 percent and 14.9 percent in April, respectively. Compared to April, the largest increases were registered in Italy (168 percent), France (118 percent) and Belgium (28.6 percent). The most significant falls in the group were registered in Hungary (-20.3 percent), Poland (-2.1 percent) and the Czech Republic (-2.9 percent). In the year-on-year comparison, the decrease was 11.3 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively, after losses of 31 percent and 26 percent, respectively.
