Dangerous panels, that have become symbolic for the oldest Czech motorway D1 leading from Prague to Brno, will be removed in the course of the next ten years. Reconstruction of the important transport artery will start in September, with total costs expected to amount to CZK 30bn. “The highway has exceeded its lifespan by ten years,” Hospodářské noviny quotes the deputy for the highway Jiří Švorc. Not all risks will be solved, however. Expansion of the highway exits to meet European standards would involve buying out the land, for which the state has neither money nor time. The D1 will thus offer only two lanes in each direction, but wider by 75 cm. Works are scheduled to start in September, with heavy traffic jams expected on the busy artery.
