Bucharest City Hall is looking for consultants for a technical evaluation for the Cathedral Plaza office tower to carry out an assessment that’s expected to cost around RON 1m. The work should include an assessment of the impact the building’s demolition would have on neighboring buildings and an estimate on the costs involved for various solutions that have been proposed for the project. Companies have until June 19 to submit bids.
Construction of Cathedral Plaza began in 2006 by Millennium Building Development after it received a construction permit from the mayor of District 1 of Bucharest. However, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese challenged the permit, arguing that it affected the image and the structural soundness of St. Joseph Cathedral, located next to the office building.
A court of final appeal rule in January 2013 that Cathedral Plaza would have to be demolished and that the land on which the building was built be restored to its original function as a park.
