Consumer prices slip in Slovakia in June

23 July 2014

Consumer prices across the Slovak market fell by 0.1 percent in June compared to the same period last year, according to figures released by the national statistics office.

“Slovakia is one of a few European countries which are in deflation this year,” Michal Kozub, an analyst at Home Credit, was quoted as saying by the TASR newswire. “But also in many other countries, prices are increasing only minimally.”
Prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages fell by 1.7 percent in June, while postal and telecom services reported a 1.5-percent decrease compared with the same month in 2013. “In the year-on-year comparison, food prices decreased the most, which is a relatively rare phenomenon,” said Boris Fojtík, an analyst at Tatra Banka. “Over the last 10 years, a drop in food prices was registered only twice, in 2005 and 2009.”
