Croatia still hopes to save summer tourist season

12 May 2020

Croatia’s Minister of Tourism Gari Capelli is going on a PR offensive to let the world (and especially Croatia’s neighbors) know that the country is open for tourism, despite lingering measures that have been put in place to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Interestingly, he called the next week an experiment, saying that tourists could stay in hotels, camping grounds or private accommodations and that the marinas were also open.

The association of hoteliers of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce predicts that larger hotel companies will open approximately up to two of the largest hotels, but that the remainder would wait until they could operate without restrictions. Capelli said that the reality is that the months of May and June had already been lost for the country’s tourism sector. But he said it wasn’t too late to save the crucial months of July and August when 63 percent of all turnover is produced.
