The Czech political scene is entirely fluid at the moment, with certainty over who will be named president still two weeks away and who will lead the country as prime minister even less certain. Andrej Babiš, whose ANO party won parliamentary elections last year, failed to win a vote of confidence yesterday. Complicating his ability to form a government are suspicions that his company Agrofert misappropriated EU funds for a congress center called the Stork’s Nest that it built outside Prague. But his fate could also hinge on the outcome of the presidential elections. Babiš and the current president Miloš Zeman are political allies for pragmatic reasons. Zeman, whose job it is to appoint a leader to form a government, looks willing to give Babiš another chance. But Jiří Drahoš, who looks likely to defeat Zeman in a run off election two weeks from now appears far less inclined to hand Babiš the keys to power.
