Czech government plans aid package for tourism sector

29 April 2020

The Ministry for Regional Development (MMR) is developing a crisis plan to support the tourism sector through the year 2022. The program is intended to help a wide array of firms and entrepreneurs involved in the sector, but will likely require changes to EU laws in order to be carried out in full. MMR Minister Klára Dostálová said travel agencies could offer clients who paid for vacations abroad vouchers as compensation. She said she was developing a system of tax-deductible recreational vouchers that companies and the self-employed could buy for use in businesses around the country. But the president of the Association of Retailers and Tourism Tomáš Prouza said that it’s unrealistic to expect companies to buy such vouchers in the current climate and that such support should be offered directly by the state. He also suggested that rather than having them put to use primarily to pay for hotels, that they should be redeemable at a wider range of services, such as restaurants, tour guides and cultural monuments.
