Czech government reshuffle proves controversial

13 December 2012

Czech President Václav Klaus appointed three new ministers Wednesday: Deputy PM Karolina Peake (LIDEM) was named defence minister, while MP Zbyněk Stanjura (Civic Democrats, ODS) was appointed transport minister and Petr Mlsna, a transport expert, has been made a minister without portfolio. The trio was proposed by the Czech Prime Minister Petr Nečas.
The government reshuffle has sparked controversy, being called “a reward” for those who helped the government survive its most recent vote of confidence.
Karolina Peak’s nomination has been criticized most as she has no experience in military matters. Nečas stressed that the post of a defence minister was political and managerial in nature and expressed confidence that Peake would cope with it well.
