The Czech government led by prime minister Bohuslav Sobotka resigned yesterday, a formal step that puts to an end a period of limited activity following parliamentary elections held in October as it was focusing only on exigent matters and international affairs. President Miloš Zeman is expected to accept the resignation on Dec. 5, though Sobotka’s government will likely be called upon to stay on duty until a new government is appointed a week later. Andrej Babiš, the leader of the victorious party ANO, has been speaking with potential cabinet members. ANO’s current ministers are the most likely candidates for their current points (ANO currently controls the ministries of education, transportation and justice, though Defense Minister Milan Stropnický could shift to the ministry of foreign affairs.
