A record number of tourists, 20 million, stayed Czech hotels and camps last year, a 9.1 percent increase compared to 2016. Pavel Vančura, who covers the tourism sector for the Czech Statistics Office, said the 20 million total was a year-on-year jump of 1.7 million. “In addition, the record for the number of nights spent was broken,” he added. “This indicator exceeded 50 million for the first time ever.” Foreign visitors were slightly in the ascendancy, racking up 10.2 million, while 9.9 million were Czechs. Neighbors, not surprisingly, were the most likely to come. German visitors made up the biggest number of foreign visitors (nearly 2 million) while 688,000 Slovaks that stayed in the Czech Republic represented an increase year-on-year of 7.2 percent. Third place went to the 578,000 Poles who visited locations in the Czech Republic.
