Last year, Czech Post announced that it had set a record for the company when it had nearly 500,000 parcels in its system at a single time. This was seen as an almost unthinkable volume of packages for the state-owned company, which has seen its market share in the lucrative portion of the market erode in recent years as private companies have moved in. As a result of the pandemic, however, the company now says that in the run-up to Christmas, it has more than 1.1 million packages in the system. “In terms of delivery parcels, we’re nearing the maximum that our capacity is able to handle,” said Czech Post’s spokesman Ivo Vysoudil. “We’re delivering the majority of them on time, we have a 92 percent success rate for deliveries, with most of them arriving by the next day. However, because such a huge number there are some delays taking place.” Vysoudil said the opening of stores had possibly saved the situation as it meant that a significant number of people would be able to buy their presents in person, rather than shopping online. For the moment, he said there was no danger that they would stop accepting packages.
