The Czech Senate’s economics committee recommended scrapping a bill that would enable the government to raise taxes again next year, writes the Bloomberg news server. The Senate, controlled by the opposition Social Democrats, will discuss the bill starting on August 15, but the government could out-gun the Senate’s decision by using its majority in the lower house of Parliament. The Ministry of Finance is seeking to increase the country’s VAT rates by one percent and the income tax for high earners, in an attempt to rein in the fiscal deficit.
