Czechia slips down five places in corruption rankings

28 January 2021

The Czech Republic fell by five places in 2020 compared to the previous year in the ranking of Transparency International (TI), which monitors corruption, and was ranked 49th. Thus, the negative evaluation of the Czech Republic continues, which had a score sixth worse on last year’s TI index compared to the previous period.

According to TI, New Zealand and Denmark are the best of the 180 countries monitored, with 88 out of 100 evaluation points, while South Sudan and Somalia are at the opposite end of the scale with 12 points. The overall assessment shows that the countries that are at the top of the rankings are better able to cope in times of pandemic and related economic problems. They have invested more in health care, are better able to provide universal health care and are less tolerant of breaches of democratic principles.

“Covid-19 is not only a health and economic crisis, it is also a corruption crisis that we are not currently managing,” said TI boss Ferreira Rubi.
