Czechia: Number of residential building permits fell 19.1% y/y in 2023

The number of dwellings for which building permits were issued or notifications with a construction project were made fell by 19.1% y/y to 241,097 in 2023, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) said.

In December last year alone, the number stood at 22,018, up 7.6% year-on-year and up 6.1% month-on-month.

Investors building for sale or rent obtained 15,816 permits in December (+8.2% y/y and +12.4% m/m) and 161,772 in the 12 months of 2023 (down 20.6% y/y), the GUS also reported.

In 2023, 241,100 dwellings were permitted or notified for construction, 19.1% less than a year earlier. Building permits for the largest number of dwellings were granted to developers (161.8 thousand, down 20.6% year-on-year) and individual investors (72.5 thousand, down 19.0%). In total, these forms of construction received permits or made notifications of construction with a building project for 97.2% of the total number of dwellings. In the other forms of construction, 6.9 thousand dwellings were recorded for which permits were granted or notifications of construction with a building project were made (last year, 4.9 thousand), it was reported.
