Czechs back GE Aviation’s plans to develop new turboprop engines

28 July 2016

The Czech government voted on Wednesday to approve an investment contract with GE Aviation for the development of a new generation of turboprop engines. The €350m project will be undertaken in partnership with the Czech Technical University in Prague, which will be training aeronautical engineers to take part. The school has applied for CZK 2 billion in grants for support of this training. In the first phase of the project, the new engines will be designed while production is expected to begin by 2022 or 2023.

“In my opinion, it’s a huge opportunity for Czech industry to shift to more advanced technologies,” said Peter Stračár. “We want to produce the most modern turboprop engines in the world.” GE was also in negotiations with the Polish government over the project.
