Czechs to possibly use electronic ID as of 2023

2 February 2022

Czechs might start using an electronic identity card in 2023, Ivan Bartos, Deputy Prime Minister for Digitisation and Regional Development Minister, said at a briefing after a round table on digitisation organised by the Chamber of Commerce yesterday.

In its policy statement, the government vowed to digitise state services until the beginning of 2025. It plans to cancel the duty to physically carry the documents as soon as possible providing there are other ways to verify people’s identity.

A set of laws on digitisation of public administration took effect yesterday under the name DEPO.

At the round table discussion, Martin Jahn, a board member at Skoda Auto, said the carmaker lacks up to hundreds of IT specialists for digital transformation.

The government should prepare a systematic programme of employing IT specialists from abroad, Jahn said, adding that legislation now impedes hiring foreign labour.

The cabinet plans to open the market for foreigners, mainly workers from Eastern Europe, said Prime Minister Petr Fiala. It needs to be done otherwise Czechia will not be competitive, he added.
