Daimler’s dieselgate crisis deepens

15 June 2020

Daimler-Benz is the latest German automobile manufacturer to face prosecution and damages connected with an emissions scandal. Reports coming out of the UK claim the company could be forced to recall as many as 500,000 vehicles there and that 10,000 British owners have signed on to a legal case being prepared against the company. As in Volkswagen’s dieselgate scandal, Daimler stands accused of employing defeat devices, doctored software in diesel vehicles, to fool emissions testing devices into registering lower levels of pollutants in their exhaust. The legal firm Slater and Gordon claims that 160,000 vehicles have already been affected by the recall notices. It’s estimated that as many as one million drivers of Mercedes vehicles in Great Britain could be eligible for compensation of as much as GBP 20,000. The Mercedes lines affected by the scandal include models with engine types GLC, E, SLK, G and M class.
