Dolní Dobrouč wants to continue the restoration of the ruins of Lanšperk Castle
The municipality of Dolní Dobrouč in the Orlicko Ústí region wants to continue the restoration of the ruins of Lanšperk Castle, which belongs to it, with the support of the Pardubice Region. It has prepared a longer-term rescue plan to help secure the castle and prevent further decay. The project also includes improving the facilities for tourists who visit the ruins, said Dominik Barták, spokesman for the region, in a press release.
“This includes a wooden tourist shelter with electricity and water connections and other facilities for hikers and cyclists,” said Martin Netolický (3PK/SOCDEM). The municipality expects to be able to carry out some of the work on its own. The total cost is estimated at CZK 4.5 million and the work should be spread over two to three years. This year the region should contribute about CZK 1 million to the restoration of the monument.
The municipality has already secured some parts of the castle in the past with the support of the regional government. The main shell wall has been preserved, the south-eastern corner has been reinforced in the ground and the cellar room, where the vaulting has been preserved.
Lanšperk Castle is located near Ústí nad Orlicí and was built in the second half of the 13th century. The building is a unique type of so-called shell castle in the country, the castle did not have a tower and the main weight of defence was provided only by the perimeter wall. After several changes of owners, the castle was acquired by the Liechtensteins in 1622, but it was already deserted at that time. The walls were gradually dismantled by people to build houses in the nearby village. Lanšperk belonged to the Liechtensteins until 1922, when the ruins became the property of the municipality of Dolní Dobrouč during the first land reform, to which Lanšperk has properly belonged since 1976. The northern part of the shell wall and fortifications, part of the vaulted cellars of the palace and a moat broken out in the rock have been preserved until today.
The castle ruins are freely accessible. Especially in the summer months it is a popular destination for hikers, walkers and cyclists.
