Domański: Adopting the euro is not ‘a matter for now’, criteria must first be met

20 February 2024

The adoption of the euro is associated with numerous advantages, not only economic but also geopolitical, but it is not a “matter for now”, as long as we do not meet the convergence criteria, it is premature to discuss the euro in Poland, Finance Minister Andrzej Domański believes.

“It is necessary to work on strengthening the Polish economy, as a result of which we will meet the convergence criteria, which are crucial for entering the eurozone. Currently, we are very far from fulfilling them. In my opinion, the discussion about the euro is premature. However, strengthening the foundations of the economy or keeping an eye on the deficit and public debt are tasks that we face on a daily basis. I see many advantages of adopting the euro, not only economically, but also geopolitically. However, this is not a matter for now,” said Domański in an interview with Business Insider.

Asked if it was a matter for the current parliamentary term, he replied: “As long as we do not meet the convergence criteria, it is premature to discuss the euro in Poland.”

The President of the National Bank of Poland (NBP), Adam Glapiński, said at the end of last year that, in his opinion, the debate on adopting the single currency could be started in Poland in 8-10 years. He pointed out that the discussion on Poland’s entry into the eurozone could begin when our country reaches the wealth – e.g. calculated as GDP per capita – of the most developed European countries: Germany, France.
