Dominion Virginia Power has received the thumbs up for the construction of a $39.6 million solar electric generating facility on the Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. The solar facility will be built on 93 acres of federal property, which is currently used for farming. Named the Oceana Solar Facility, the new scheme will be able to generate 17.6-megawatts, enough energy to power 1,886 homes. The output of the facility will be sold to Virginia’s state government through a negotiated purchase agreement for 25 years. The solar panels are scheduled to come online this coming December.
