Polish dust emissions from nuisance plants decreased by 17% in 2020

30 June 2021

The volume of dust emissions from plants particularly burdensome for air purity, i.e. from plants with the highest emissions of pollutants into the air in the country (approx. 1,856 plants) amounted to approx. 23 thousand and decreased by 17% y / y, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. The emission of gaseous pollutants from particularly burdensome plants was 186 million tonnes and decreased by 6% compared to 2019.

Dust emission came mainly from fuel combustion processes (54% of dust emissions from particularly noxious plants). The main emission sources were industrial processing (51%) and entities operating in the field of production and supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water (39%), according to the report.

Over 99% of gaseous pollutant emissions were carbon dioxide and 0.1% each – sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. The dominant sources of industrial gaseous pollutant emissions were entities operating in the field of electricity, gas, steam and hot water production and supply (67%) and industrial processing plants (31%).

In 2020, 16.3 million tons (99.9%) of dust and 2.7 million tons (70.4%) of gases (excluding CO2) emitted by plants that are particularly burdensome for air cleanliness, were retained in devices for reducing air pollution. Pollutants retained or neutralized in 2020 for individual types of gaseous pollutants amounted to: 91.7% for sulfur dioxide, 77.7% for hydrocarbons, 40.8% for nitrogen oxides, 31.0% for carbon monoxide, 43.3% for other pollutants (mainly ammonia, carbon disulphide, fluorine, hydrogen sulphide, organochlorine compounds), GUS reported.
