€10m renovation project agreed for Sofia’s St. Alexander Nevski cathedral

19 January 2016

The Bulgarian state has allocated €10m for structural work and repairs of the St. Alexander Nevski cathedral in Sofia after one year of discussions. The decision was announced by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov at a parliamentary session.

Experts from the Ministry of Regional Development found that the cathedral was in poor shape structurally as the columns are compromised and leaks have damaged the frescoes in the historic monument. Building experts determined that the building’s ceiling has become a danger to visitors and called for a safety net to be installed. In 2015, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church received around €11 m for the construction and repair of 321 churches and 29 monasteries.
