The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre is on the verge of completion. Located on the north Athens seaside, 4.5 km from the center of the capital, the project involves the construction of an ecologically sustainable multifunctional center that extends over 232,000 sqm.
Most of the space is taken up by a public park, but several public buildings are also being built on the land, including the 33,000 sqm Greek National Opera, which includes a 1,400-seat concert hall plus a 400-seat experimental theater and the National Library (24,000 sqm), capable of housing 750,000 books.
The project has been driven through a public private project structure and is one of the most significant cultural and environmental projects to be undertaken in Greece. The overall investment is expected to reach €566m. Construction began in 2013 and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
