Croatians spent HRK 1.194bn (€157m) during the Easter holidays, a 14 percent drop from the same period last year. The Croatian Chamber of Commerce (HGK) reports that in 2019, the holiday weekend produced HRK 1.4bn in sales. Despite the depressed sales figures, they suggest that the economy hasn’t shut down entirely despite the forced closures implemented by the government to fight the pandemic. According to the country’s tax Administrator, total sales during the holiday period by retailers came to HRK 838m (€110m). Analysts warn that Croatia’s external debt will begin to grow for the first time since 2013 as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
