Glacial progress by the Czech Highway Authority (RSD) on completing Prague’s ring road continued yesterday with news that it had submitted documentation for an EIA on an 8 km stretch of the road. If by some chance construction on Section 519, which runs from Suchdol across the Vltava river to the D8 motorway, gets underway as scheduled 2024, it could be ready for use by 2028. Until then, motorists needing to cross the river are free to continue adding to the daily traffic jams that clog Prague 6 and Prague 7. Mayors of villages north of Prague have continuously demanded that the route head further north, but the city’s leadership rejected this as unfeasible. The Institute for Planning and Development (IPR) warned that the northern route would consume twice as much land and require changes to the master plans of several villages.
