Enemies of construction legislation reform fight back

28 June 2019

The fightback over the current version of the new construction law has begun. Charles University Petr Svoboda, legal expert from Charles University, claimed yesterday in a dvtv interview that the bill was written in order to serve the interests of developers. He said that government ministries lack the professional know-how and the capacity to write the new legislation themselves, so it simply used a proposal written by the Czech Chamber of Commerce. The result, he said, is a suit tailor-made for developers. “If the law is supposed to regulate relations between builders on the one hand and land owners, neighbors and organs of the civil service on the other, then it can’t be prepared by a subject that represents the building corporations.” His views were rejected by deputy minister for Regional Development Marcela Pavlova who said the Chamber of Commerce had participated in the bill’s creation but was not its sole author. The current construction law is unworkable and is choking off important investments by the private and public sectors.
